In the RED driving seat: Stuart Sharp

In the RED driving seat this month is North East based driving instructor Stuart Sharp.

Stuart Sharp

• In your opinion, what is the most difficult element of the practical driving test?

I think the most difficult element of the practical driving test is the students’ ability to deal with nerves on the day, from the practice drive before the test where students may make silly mistakes which they haven’t done previously, to the nerves affecting how they drive during the test itself. It’s such a shame if nerves get the better of them!

• If money was no object, what make and model of car would you choose to drive?

I would love to own a SAAB 900 T16 S. Before joining RED, I worked as a Saab technician for 20 years, I loved the job and made some great friends. The SAAB 900T 16S was always my favourite, it’s great fun to drive and has lots of character.

• What is your favourite aspect of your job?

Every day and every lesson is different and it’s great meeting new people. When someone passes it’s the best feeling in the world, fantastic for them, but I also get a lot of satisfaction knowing that I’ve taught them.

• If you were hosting a dinner party, which three guests, dead or alive, would you invite and why?

The first is Eric Clapton. I’ve been a fan since I was at school and have really enjoyed seeing him perform live. The second is Jonathan Agnew. I became a cricket fan in my early 20s and I always enjoy listening to Test Match Special in the summer. Last but not least is Gary Oldman. His performances are excellent in ‘Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy’, ‘Dracula’ and ‘Leon’ to name but a few, and I think he’d be really interesting to sit and talk to.

• What do you like to do in your spare time?

I enjoy spending time with my wife and young children and particularly love living in Northumberland with its beaches, castles and history. We like being outdoors best and there’s never a shortage of things to do!
